An east coast campervan itinerary

A flexible route between Brisbane and Cairns.

The Queensland coast offers beaches, islands, tropical towns and national parks, but Brisbane to Cairns is a long journey. The best budget itinerary is one that leaves enough time to enjoy a few places instead of turning every day into a drive. You can travel in either direction or choose a shorter section and return to your starting point.

Use the stages below as building blocks, not a fixed timetable. Choose the experiences that matter to you, check current road and weather information, and book a legal place to stay for each night.

Start in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast

Allow time to collect the camper, inspect its equipment and stock up before leaving the city. A first night within an easy drive can be useful after a flight. The Sunshine Coast offers beaches, walking and towns where you can settle into the vehicle without committing immediately to a long day on the highway.

Decide whether you want a relaxed coastal break or a faster start towards the north. Look at campground locations and local parking rules before arriving. If a campsite is away from the beach, include the extra driving in your daily plan.

North through the Fraser Coast

Hervey Bay can be a base for exploring the Fraser Coast and considering organised activities. If you plan to visit K’gari, check ferry arrangements, permits and rental restrictions: do not assume a hired camper can be taken to an island or driven on sand.

If you have more time

Continue towards the Bundaberg region if time permits, or choose a different overnight stop that fits your preferred driving distance. Activities may be seasonal and require separate bookings. Keep a day flexible for weather and avoid building the itinerary around a single fixed departure if you can.

Make time for the Whitsundays

Airlie Beach is a starting point for many Whitsundays activities. A boat trip can take a significant part of a day, so staying more than one night may be more enjoyable than arriving late and leaving immediately after an excursion.

Price optional activities separately from the campervan hire and campsite. If they stretch the budget, choose a few priorities and leave room for walks, viewpoints and time in town. Check marine conditions and the operator’s current requirements before booking.

Continue through Townsville to tropical north Queensland

Townsville and the surrounding area can break up the journey north. Farther on, consider stops around Mission Beach or the Atherton Tablelands before reaching Cairns. Choose according to the time you have, not a checklist of every attraction on the map.

Tropical weather can affect road conditions, swimming and activities, especially during periods of heavy rain. Follow current flood, marine stinger and crocodile safety advice, and check the status of walks and swimming sites before visiting.

Before choosing your pickup and return

Compare Brisbane-to-Cairns with the reverse direction and a shorter return loop. Give each option the same budget categories:

  • Rental quote, any one-way fee and depot transfers.
  • Fuel, campgrounds, park passes and meals.
  • Flights or onward transport and the activities you actually want to book.

A longer hire can sometimes make a route more comfortable, but only a current quote can show its cost.

Check depot opening hours and allow time for cleaning, refuelling and return. For cheap campervan hire on Australia’s east coast, flexibility is valuable: a manageable route with a few memorable stops is often better value than paying to rush through many places.
